LIGHT DRAWING AND LINE

Drawing is a very physical act of making marks, (usually) on a surface.  But today we begin to make marks not on paper but in the air, using light as the medium and the camera as the picture plane.  This gives you a physical sense of creating line on a grand scale, and of the spatial aspects of line.  Today we will talk about and record as many aspects line as we can get through in our time, to be continued.

Line characteristics

  • line is the moving path of a point
  • a series of adjacent points
  • a connection between two points
  • an implied connection between two point
  • An orientation: horizontal, vertical, diagonal
  • Direction.  Line weight or thickness/value of line implies beginning and end, closer and further
  • Continuity: Continuous line has a stronger sense of direction than broken or jagged line
  • Gesture: the essence of form and movement rather than description
  • Contour: describing edges and volumes
