Light moods

Three extremes of lighting to help you think about mood and contrast.

Very low light, mysterious form, mysterious mood, low contrast

Very low contrast

Low light, visible form, no emphasis of the form, low contrast

Please note the difference in the final assignment and the assignment I gave you on Tuesday.

2 12 2009

Homework for Thursday
On Tuesday I gave you all a piece of black paper to simply try a value drawing that emphasizes the light in a room.  You might draw a window and a few things in front of it, but as I said in class, I want you to look at the way the light falls on the walls and under objects.  I would like to see that drawing on Thursday.

The final drawing assignment
The final drawing assignment is laid out below.  I will hand out paper on Thursday and talk to you again on about size and media options.

The final drawing will be on

Wrap up plan and final drawing assignment, the good news

1 12 2009

We will have our final critique on TUESDAY December 8th.  That’s next Tuesday.  ATTENDANCE  IS REQUIRED.

On Thursday December 4th I will hand you your running grade including absences.  If you want to complete or re-do any assignments it must now be  a NEW drawing which addresses the assignment.  You can give me these assignments before Friday December 11th.

You will be able to pick up your final drawing on Friday December 11, or in the following week.

You have already received your directions for improving and continuing your final drawing.  If you did not do the assignment or have been asked to re-do the assignment, that drawing is due on THURSDAY.  Your final assignment is:

An scene interior WITH a view to the exterior.

Day or night, but it must show that the difference in light from the interior to the exterior.

VALUE
This must be a full range value drawing, from the lightest lights all the way to black.

LIGHT
Keep in mind what we have talked about in terms of incidental light, reflected light, and cast shadow.  This will help show the interior light, exterior light, and how the light falls on objects.  IT’S EASIER TO HAVE ONE LIGHT SOURCE IN A ROOM.  Keep in mind that when you have multiple light sources, you have to go by what you SEE.

PERSPECTIVE
Keep in mind that everything needs to be in a consistent perspective, particularly  if I demonstrated something to you in class.  You may well have different viewpoints in your drawing.  How does your viewpoint help to make your drawing interesting?  Is there anything you need to do provide more interest?

MOVEMENT
Throughout the semester there has been talk and a presentation on movement, what leads your eye to a particular place, what makes it stop there.  Some things we have mentioned are direction, value changes, and the amount of detail and how detail might diminish, or softness/ hardness of an edge.  What can you do to help lead the eye around the drawing?

MOOD
We have just begun to talk more about mood, how it can relate to value and subject, and will talk more about that on Thursday.

New page to read.

1 12 2009

I’ve added a new page http://visart1.wordpress.com/final-drawing-composition-set-up-reminders/
You can see how very similar your finale drawing will be to the assignment you had over the last week, and you can see if you are on the right track.  You need to read and comprehend it.

Drawing assignment through to December 1, print this now and ask me questions if you are confused, or risk needing to redo the assignment later

20 11 2009

As I said, this is a bare MINIMUM of 2 HOURS, really more than that, is the time I’m asking you to do this.

  • On the paper I provided, (Or if not, a 5×7 maximum piece of paper cut to size***)
  • Sharpie pens.
  • Line and value.  You decide how much value will make a good drawing.

You will need to think about this before you draw, maybe move some things around before you draw. I am asking you to make important decisions about WHAT you decide to draw.  I am asking you to decide HOW you might make a great composition.

Assignment option #1

A dining room interior and a view of the exterior through the window.  I want to see plates and other things on the table.  Consider the elements I want to see outside the window.

Composition is VERY important  You decide what IS included, what is NOT included, but you should decide to include things because it makes a better composition, is more interesting.  How much is too much?  How little is just too boring.

Assignment option # 2

A room with objects in it, and a view to the outdoors.  It could be the bathroom, the garage, the basement, whatever as long as it is interesting.  I want to be able to tell what sort of room I’m in by the objects that are there.  I want to be able to to see outside.

Composition is VERY important.  You decide what IS included, what is NOT included.  You decide how much detail you will use.  How much is too much?  How little is just too boring.

Assignment: perspective practice again

18 11 2009

Sit near a window with an interesting view, with various angles of buildings, cars, etc, and draw the entire scene from the window frame out.

Don’t forget to review terminology and concepts for critiques today.

Your Line/Value drawings

5 11 2009

This assignment was to experiment with line and value in pencils using the range of hardness ans softness.  The emphasis was on experimental mark making, and looking at how gestalt theory affect the way we read value.
